Awesome letter #5: Bringing closure to your year-long correspondence

The goal of this blog series is to provide STEM pen pals with inspiration and ideas from real letters written by STEM professionals. We hope this series serves as a resource for pen pals to make letters accessible and engaging for pre-scientists.

This letter was written by STEM pen pal Trinity to an 8th grade pre-scientist for round 4. The theme this round was reflect and inspire.

The letter was annotated and reviewed by program manager Jenelle Whitman, and here’s what she had to say:

Overall, why was this letter exceptional?

Since round 4 is the last letter of the yearlong pen pal correspondence, it’s really important to bring closure to the relationship. Trinity does a great job of including relevant STEM-related points in her letter while also covering this round’s theme. At the end of the letter Trinity highlights good qualities she learned about her pen pal through their correspondence and encourages them to continue stay motivated and pursing things they enjoy. Trinity also mentions safe activities her pen pal can try this summer that are fun and STEM related, to continue sparking her pen pal’s curiosity about STEM.

Check out the letter below, with Jenelle’s annotations in the margins. Thanks to Trinity for not only being a great pen pal, but also allowing us to annotate and publish their letter so others can benefit!
